Look you and I both know that we all have a tendency to lose focus at times and that this harms our ability to manage our time. At work we can easily be distracted by the phone or the notification sound that a new email has come in. Or the fact that we can ask Google anything we want any time we wish.
However, there are some simple… some would say stupidly simple ways to attain focus that just might allow you to get more done today, this week and this month.
Tip #1: Turn off all unnecessary notification sounds.
This means turn off the sound that lets you know a new email has come in. This also means turning off your cell phone if you don’t need it for work. And for those of us who work from home turn off your instant messenger applications.
Tip #2: Decide what your main priorities are for the day and write them down.
I know you’ve heard this before but do you do this each and every day without fail? Do you actually decide what are the one or two most important things you must do to move a project forward each day and then make sure that nothing and I mean nothing gets in your way of achieving that objective? If not, put this one back into practice right away.
Tip #3: Take the time to write project plans–don’t just work by the seat of your pants.
Most people know their jobs well enough that they can figure out what they need to do next after they complete an action related to a project. However did you know that you can be up to 30% more efficient if you’ve actually written down your project in advance? Not only does this save time having to figure out what to do next after each step but it also lets you know if you are falling behind schedule and what to do about it BEFORE the final days when a project is due. Following this one tip alone will make you super effective.
So that’s it. Get rid of distractions. Write down your daily priorities and make project plans. If you do these three things you’ll achieve greater focus, use your time better and enjoy your life and work more.
