In this report I review what I learned regarding what is krill oil and krill oil is really a nutritional supplement made by extracting the fats from sea animals generally known as krill.
Krill oil supplies Omega-3 fatty acids like fish oil, but unlike fish-oil they are primarily bound to phospholipids and not triglycerides.
Phospholipids are the type of lipids that form cellular membranes which is believed to be why Omega-3 fatty acids in krill oil are generally more readily absorbed. Krill oil also contains an antioxidant molecule called astaxanthin, a carotenoid antioxidant with natural health benefits.
Krill oil is generally consumed for the Omega-3 fats that have a variety of therapeutic benefits, including improvements in cancer, heart disease, arthritis, lots of different mental conditions, immune function, and a lot more.
Here I am not gonna discuss the health rewards of Omega-3 fats but consider the studies where they specifically supplement with krill oil. All the health benefits that pertain to Omega-3 from fish oil or food should apply to krill oil as well.
In one study, women were randomized into two groups. The groups consumed 2g daily of either krill oil or fish-oil. Krill oil was much more effective than fish oil for treating the signs of dysmenorrhea and premenstrual syndrome.
A study split patients into groups. One took krill oil daily, and the other fish oil supplements. The krill oil groups reduced total cholesterol, Ldl cholesterol and triglycerides, and increased High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, significantly more as opposed to fish-oil group.
They are all common risks for heart disease, therefore it seems plausible that krill oil may drastically reduce cardiovascular disease risk.
A randomized study sorted into two groups. One group took krill oil daily, and the other took placebo. The krill oil group decreased C-Reactive Protein by significantly while it increased in the placebo group.
It appears clear that krill oil is a far more powerful source of Omega-3 compared to fish oil supplements, possibly because of better absorption or other nutrients in it for example the antioxidant Astaxanthin.
Another reason krill oil is preferred is that some sources of fish are contaminated. Krill is lower in the food chain and contains lower quantities of toxins.
